An ambition of the visual image subcommittee has been to make more of the unique series of green plaques seen all over our town. They have various origins from the Borough Council to the Trinity Rotary Club, probably the majority, the Civic Society and individual householders.
To gather and disseminate information for visitors and local people on all these green plaques is our current project. There are over 100!
Firstly, an interactive map of Lynn will enable the user to pin point the green plaque and extra information will available. For example – Bank House. Here are plenty of stories to tell. Samuel Gurney Cresswell, the explorer, Elizabeth Fry, the prison reformer, how Charles I statue got up there and the huge wine cellars this private family kept topped up from Lynn’s massive wine imports. Every green plaque has so much more to tell us. We are aiming for a digital version on our website using QR codes as one way to access more information online.
Secondly for those less digitally minded we will also have a useful fold out map with an over view of the green plaques. From this the visitor will learn about our visiting monarchs, monks and friars, literary figures, historic buildings and all the people and events from the past which have gone into the making of our fine town.
It’s a work in progress. Our team and the Town Guides have laid down the ground work, taking photographs of green plaques in all kinds of places and situations. We have finance for most of the scheme but for the six new plaques we plan to add to the collection we are hoping for help with modest grants and donations.
