Local List
King’s Lynn has a rich cultural and architectural heritage, much of which is protected by existing legislation. We have many ‘listed’ buildings and we have a large Conservation Area that includes much of the central town (see green area on plan). But what about other buildings and areas of the town that are not protected but still have local heritage interest?
In 2009, King’s Lynn Civic Society were invited by the then Borough Council conservation officer to begin compiling a list of buildings, places and structures of local interest but lying outside of the conservation areas. Many other local authorities retain similar ‘Local Lists’ which help inform planning policy – but King’s Lynn has never previously had one.
After several years of work, KLCS have now drawn together a King’s Lynn Local List comprising over 200 buildings and features in North, South and West Lynn, in Gaywood, Wootton Road, Goodwins Road, Tennyson Road and other parts of town. In association with the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, the Civic Society have now agreed to maintain this list as an online aid to heritage planning and local historical research within the town.
To use the interactive map – click once on one of the coloured areas to bring up the name, and then click twice on the name to open more information about that area. You will then be able to click through to specific information about each entry on the ‘Local List’.
