Willow Park – Grange Hotel

North Gaywood

Spectacular Edwardian house now used as a hotel. What appear to have once been extensive grounds have unfortunately been subdivided with late 20th-century development and many of the mature trees that must have once formed the garden setting are now in adjacent private gardens.

Complex building, partly black and white timber and featuring large turret with octagonal tiled spire. Attractive chimneys with brick horizontal ridges. Decorative bargeboards on gables. Partial views possible from adjacent streets. Believed to have a grand hall and staircase inside.

Former home of R J Catleugh, owner of former department store in Norfolk Street and built for him. See KL Magazine July 2013: A house of distinction and a house of magic … ‘The Grange was built around 1910 by Benjamin William Langley and his well-respected local company, who were based in Aickman’s Yard in King’s Lynn … Bearing a remarkable similarity to what is now the Links Hotel in West Runton, the building is an architectural marvel of the Edwardian era … packed with … period features from the magnificent minstrels gallery to the distinctive external tower … It was a house to be proud of and was home for many years to the Catleugh family – probably best known for the Alderman Catleugh Secondary Modern School for Boys and the upmarket store in King’s Lynn (where) the school uniforms were … available … in the early years of the Second World War it was home to the Mayor of King’s Lynn – John Harwood Catleugh … The Catleughs were still living there as the 1960s dawned … some 50 years later you can still hear local people referring to Catleugh’s Corner.’
