This is probably the most architecturally interesting and varied road in the suburbs, and should be considered for conservation area status. It contains one listed building (Elmer Lodge), and the former St James Workhouse, Sugars Almshouses and possibly Backhams Almshouses should be considered for national listing. The story of Goodwins Road as a development is told in David Higgins Brown Brick and Rounded Corners: laid out in the mid-19th century with a view to high class development and named after its entrepreneur Harvey Goodwin, but not actually built up properly until the 1870s/80s. Most of its big individual houses feature in the list.
